Freedom and Culture Weekend

9-11 November Southbank Centre

The quest for freedom has been a important defining force in the way different art forms, from literature to music to dance to the visual arts, have developed in different cultures.

In partnership with eminent artists, activists and thinkers as well as emergent younger talent, the Freedom and Culture programme explores the crucial dimensions of oppression and freedom, culminating in a vibrant weekend programme around the International Creative Forum on 10 November. This full-day event features artists, thinkers and cultural commentators who discuss the bicentenary parliamentary abolition of the slave trade.

Participants over the whole weekend will include American activist, academic, and writer Angela Davis, Nigerian playwright and Nobel Laureate, Wole Solyinka, a keynote address from distinguished academic, Professor Stuart Hall as well as multi-award winning author Andrea Levy and acclaimed filmmaker, John Akomfrah and performances from the Philharmonia Orchestra and Heather Small.

Tickets for the International Creative Forum on 10 November: £120 full price (individuals, organisations with a turnover of £150k+) £60 concessions (includes organisations with a turnover of less than £150k a year) Ticket price includes teas, coffees and lunch.
